Song of the Bells By Robert Beaser
Robert Beaser is one of the greatest lyrical composers of the modern era. The brilliant structure of his pieces has won him widespread acclaim, and he is often cited as one of the most important composers among those experimenting with new tonality.
"Song of the Bells" was commissioned for the Solisti New York Chamber Orchestra and Paula Robison. It is a single-movement flute concerto, built in an asymmetrical arch. Throughout the piece themes by ensemble and soloist are stated that recall the Westminster chimes, broken by free improvisation from the flute performer. The climax is reached when the horns sing the theme over the blindingly fast wind activity, before the piece quickly fades into the distance.
Performed by the Solisti New York Chamber Ensemble and Paula Robison on flute.

Dragon Rhyme Movement II: Energetically By Chen Yi
Переглядів 26 тис.10 років тому
This piece gets its title from the fact that its two movements mirror each other. Whereas the first movement of "Dragon Rhyme" has a very floaty feeling to it and features pitched percussion and woodwinds mostly, this movement goes the opposite way by being very fast and powerful, and featuring blaring brass and drums. Performed by the Hartt School Wind Ensemble.
Dragon Rhyme Movement I: Mysteriously-Harmoniously By Chen Yi
Переглядів 17 тис.10 років тому
Composer Chen Yi has distinguished herself among her peers in the musical world with her works, which combine elements of Western music with those of Chinese tunes. This piece, premiered at Carnegie Hall in 2010 by the Hartt School Wind Ensemble, features two movements that incorporate the same theme but apply it in drastically different ways. This first movement prominently features shimmering...

Cheetah By Karel Husa

Karel Husa's most recent composition for band is a musical depiction of the fervent chase of a dangerous wild animal that eventually collapses from exhaustion. Performed by the North Texas Wind Symphony.
Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral (Band Version) By Richard Wagner
Переглядів 72 тис.11 років тому
This beautiful piece is one of the most famous excerpts from any Wagner opera. A true example of a procession, this work exhibits moments of quiet joy that eventually expand into massive statements from the full ensemble. This transcription for concert band is exceptionally orchestrated and carries all of the passion of the original. :-) Performed by the Northwestern University Symphonic Winds.
From a Dark Millennium By Joseph Schwantner
Переглядів 16 тис.11 років тому
This piece is Joseph Schwantner's second work for band. Much like "...And the Mountains Rising Nowhere," this piece takes its title from an original poem by the composer. The title is very fitting, because the piece has a very dark, heavy, and mysterious atmosphere, which is carried relentlessly forward by constantly repeating musical patterns. Performed by the North Texas Wind Symphony.
Music for Prague 1968 Movements III & IV: Interlude & Toccata and Chorale By Karel Husa
Переглядів 8 тис.11 років тому
These last two movements of "Music for Prague" are played without a break between them. The third movement, the short "Interlude," is only played by the percussion section. A long snare drum fermata leads into the final movement, which is initially fast and rhythmic like the first, before resolving in a final dramatic chorale style. Performed by the North Texas Wind Symphony.
Music for Prague 1968 Movement II: Aria By Karel Husa
Переглядів 6 тис.11 років тому
This is the second movement of Karel Husa's famous work, "Music for Prague." This movement is extremely slow, dark, and ponderous, and it heavily features the lower brass and woodwind instruments. Performed by the North Texas Wind Symphony.
Music for Prague 1968 Movement I: Introduction and Fanfare By Karel Husa
Переглядів 9 тис.11 років тому
This powerful work for band is Karel Husa's most famous piece. Being moved by the invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Warsaw Pact nations in 1968, Husa sought to write a work that would pay tribute to a city that, he said, had only seen freedom for a few moments of its thousand-year long existence. This first movement begins very quietly with a lengthy piccolo solo, but eventually erupts into a c...
Aftertones of Infinity By Joseph Schwantner
Переглядів 18 тис.11 років тому
This orchestral work is one of Joseph Schwantner's greatest achievements, and was the recipient of the 1979 Pulitzer Prize in Music. The piece is a prime example of the composer's masterful coloration skills, and uses a very large orchestra along with textures like wordless vocalizing and tuned crystal glasses. The piece overlays static, ethereal sections with dark, rhythmic ones, and conjures ...
Wolf Rounds By Christopher Rouse
Переглядів 4,4 тис.11 років тому
An unusual musical idea brought to life, "Wolf Rounds" is Christopher Rouse's only composition for wind band. This piece derives its name from the fact that he writes one theme repeating again and again, cycling through to another theme. The entire piece is written like this, and is, in the composer's words, much like the way predatory wolves circle around their prey. Performed by the Universit...
Cloudburst By Eric Whitacre
Переглядів 77 тис.11 років тому
This, Eric Whitacre's "Cloudburst", may possibly be the greatest modern work ever written for chorus. I wish I had the words to explain how truly incredible this song is, but I just don't. That being the case, just listen, and enjoy, and let the work speak for itself. :-) Performed by the Brigham Young University Singers.
The West Symphony Movement 4: Sunset below the Horizon, Flaming Red By Satoshi Yagisawa
Переглядів 9 тис.11 років тому
This is the huge and climactic final movement of "The West Symphony." "Sunset below the horizon, Flaming Red" is perhaps unique in all four movements because it literally takes large sections of writing from the other three and incorporates them in its stuctures. It has its own seperate themes as well, and the idea of bringing together all the other movements, coupled with that, bring Satoshi Y...
The West Symphony Movement 3: The Lost Capital By Satoshi Yagisawa
Переглядів 4,1 тис.11 років тому
It can be difficult to believe that this movement is a part of the same work as the other three, but it is indeed. "The Lost Capital" can be considered to be the "pretty" movement of "The West Symphony." It begins with a sequence from the high woodwinds and pitched percussion, which is featured throughout the work, before progressing to a new, much lighter chorale than is featured in the rest o...

Our Community Concert Band played this piece and I was lucky enough to be one of the 1st Trombones. What a cool set of notes in the harmony. This is just one of those super special pieces that I’m so grateful to have played on. West Jordan Community Concert Band ‘24!!! :)

played this piece my sophomore year of high school and everyone was in tears (including my director who doesn’t show emotions) our directors words before giving us the piece were “think of people you love, play it emotionally, don’t think about the technical stuff that makes it so stuck in one spot, keep it moving, and most of all just feel the music” it was the most beautiful thing we played that year, we played and there was not a dry eye in the room at all

The identification of timbre and interplay i.e. that lone piano pitch makes me think of Druckman, the constant percussion really inspired me anf made me realize how necessary percussion need to be in today's music. On second hearing the wind music blew my mind, does the bass clarinet ever stop?Trumprts against trombones so inventive.

Inventive, exciting,Intelligent. So happy to hear CindyMctee ! She studied wJacobDruckman and Penderecky and ?McCombie. She uses repetition motifs here it almost sounds minimalist(which every American who grows up with popmusic understands)outstanding percussion, winds, brass ensembles parts. Married to Slatkin and her performed widely! Glad I was able to find this will find her other scores.

Excellent performance, which military bands excel at. The trombones and low brass just before the midpoint are incredible in their soft rendition of the main theme. I must have played this piece at least three or four times in my high school and college years from 1966 to 1976.
